Stacking heat pump rebates: federal + provincial + local

Last checked 2026-11-01 · Sources linked below · Live rebate tracker

Short answer: In many provinces you can combine the federal National Heat Pump Rebate with provincial or utility rebates and city financing, but each programme sets its own rules. The safe order: check provincial and utility rules first (some need pre-approval or registered contractors), then install from 1 November 2026, keep receipts for every programme, and apply to each one.

The three layers

  1. Federal: National Heat Pump Rebate, $2,000 or up to $10,000 by income. Rules.
  2. Provincial or utility: varies a lot. See your province hub.
  3. City: mostly low-interest financing. See rebates by city.

Order of operations

  1. Read the provincial and utility rules first. Some need an energy assessment, pre-approval or a programme-registered contractor before installation.
  2. Choose an eligible model. Confirm the AHRI number is on the federal list and meets any provincial spec (e.g. cold-climate).
  3. Sign and install on or after 1 November 2026.
  4. Collect paperwork for every programme. The federal receipt needs five details within 6 months. Use our receipt checklist.
  5. Apply to each programme. The federal portal opens in early 2027.

Watch-outs

Frequently asked questions

Can I stack the federal rebate with Ontario's Home Renovation Savings?

Check both programmes' current terms. Ontario's own rules (programme-qualified contractor, first space-heating heat pump) apply on top of the federal ones. Our Ontario hub links to the official pages.

What if I already got federal heat pump money at this address?

You're not eligible for the National Heat Pump Rebate if anyone at the address previously got federal heat pump funding, such as the Greener Homes Grant or OHPA.

Does city financing count as a rebate?

Usually not. Programmes like Toronto HELP or Edmonton's CEIP are loans repaid over time, often on your property tax bill. They can still be combined with rebates.
