How to spot a heat pump rebate scam

Last checked 2026-11-01 · Sources linked below · Live rebate tracker

Short answer: Environment and Climate Change Canada never goes door-to-door or makes marketing calls about the rebate. If someone knocks or calls claiming to be from the programme, it's not the government. You start the conversation with an installer, not the other way round.

The Government of Canada says it is aware of salespeople visiting and calling homes with misleading tactics that reference the National Heat Pump Rebate.

The official rule of thumb

Environment and Climate Change Canada NEVER goes door-to-door asking to enter Canadians' homes to inspect, sell, or rent heating and cooling equipment, nor are marketing calls being made. (Canada.ca)

Red flags

What to do instead

  1. You start the conversation. Contact qualified HVAC companies yourself. Many provinces and utilities publish vetted installer lists.
  2. Get two or three quotes with AHRI numbers, and check them.
  3. Read the official rules.
