How to get ready to apply for the National Heat Pump Rebate

Last checked 2026-11-01 · Sources linked below · Live rebate tracker

Short answer: The application portal isn't open yet. Canada.ca says early 2027. To be ready: work out your after-tax household income (line 23600 minus line 43500, plus your spouse's), have your SIN ready for CRA verification, confirm the model's AHRI number is on the eligible list, and keep a receipt showing the five required details within 6 months of install.

Checklist

  1. Income. Your 2025 line 23600 minus line 43500, plus the same for a spouse or partner. Compare it with your province's threshold using the income checker. The CRA will verify it using your SIN.
  2. Ownership. You must own the home. It doesn't have to be your main home.
  3. No prior federal heat pump funding at the address.
  4. Eligible equipment. Get the AHRI number and check it on the eligible list.
  5. Contractor. It must be bought from and installed by an HVAC contractor, so no DIY.
  6. Receipt. Within 6 months of install, with the five required details. See the receipt checklist.

Ontario: how to apply

Ontario homeowners apply for the federal rebate through the same national portal. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings is a separate application. See the Ontario hub and stacking guide.

Frequently asked questions

When can I apply?

Canada.ca says the portal opens in early 2027. Installs on or after 1 November 2026 count. The programme runs until March 2034 or until funds run out.

Do I need a pre-installation energy assessment?

The federal rules don't list one. Some provincial or city programmes do, so check those if you plan to stack.

Will I need an electrical panel upgrade?

Sometimes. Heat pumps, especially with electric backup strips, can need more capacity. Ask your contractor to check your panel. That's a separate cost the federal rebate doesn't specifically cover.
